A few honest answers to the questions we get asked most on-site in Edenvale and Sebenza.
It’s called rain fade: heavy rain and thick cloud absorb some of the satellite signal before it reaches your dish. A correctly aligned dish with a clear line of sight will usually cope with normal Highveld storms and recover within minutes. If your signal drops in light drizzle or takes hours to return, the dish is likely under-aligned and needs a technician to fine-tune it.
As a rule of thumb: after any major storm or strong wind event, after any roof or gutter work near the dish, and otherwise roughly every 12–24 months as a preventative check. Gauteng’s summer thunderstorms are the most common cause of dishes shifting slightly out of alignment.
Both record and pause live TV, but the Explora range adds a home network connection for catch-up content, on-demand titles and multi-room viewing without extra cabling in some setups. An HD PVR is simpler and more budget-friendly if you mainly want live TV with recording. We’ll talk you through which suits your household during the quote.
The dish needs an unobstructed line of sight toward the satellite arc (roughly north-facing in South Africa), clear of trees, chimneys, water tanks and neighbouring roof lines that could grow into the signal path over time. A slightly less convenient mounting point with a clear view almost always outperforms a convenient one that’s partly blocked.
Usually not — your dish alignment and decoder settings are unaffected by a power cut. What you may see afterwards is a “no signal” or searching screen while the decoder reboots and re-locks onto the satellite, which typically clears itself within a few minutes. If it doesn’t clear, the outage may have coincided with a cable or connector fault that’s worth having checked.
You can, but the tolerances are tight — a dish that’s off by even a degree or two can mean a weak or unstable signal that seems fine until the next storm. There’s also the roof-safety side to consider. Most self-installs we’re called out to fix cost more in the end than a professional install would have.
Broadly, these point to a signal or connection issue rather than a decoder fault — anything from a loose cable connector to a misaligned dish or a faulty LNB. Restarting the decoder is worth trying first; if the code returns, it’s a sign the dish or cabling needs a proper inspection rather than another reset.
Depending on your decoder and dish type, this is done either through Extra View wiring off your existing dish, a second dedicated dish and decoder, or a network-based multi-room setup. Each has different cost and performance trade-offs, and getting the wiring right the first time avoids signal loss to either room later.
